7 Problems On General Luna's Leadership that Team Leads and Project Managers Can Relate To
11:15 AM
WARNING: Wrong Grammar Ahead!!! Pinoy Lang Po. (Nyeta! Ingles-inglesin moko sa bayan ko?!)
This is probably the worst situation a Project Manager can find himself in. Especially a PM who is leading a group of volunteers or "forced assigned" members from other departments to work on a small project.
Having NO real authority to make and implement decisions. Be it on planning, execution and control. Most especially when it comes to rendering disciplinary actions and performance evaluation, if you don't have these authority you will be in a lot of trouble.
It's like when Heneral Luna ordered Capt. Janolino to send reinforcement but instead of following the order, it was met by insubordination and insolence. "Sa Presidente lang ako susunod!"
Then Heneral Luna had Artikulo Uno read, if my memory serves me right it states that…
Luna stripped Janolino and his men of their ranks and put them in prison. Heneral Luna also put Felipe Buencamino and Pedro Paterno behind bars because of treason i.e. conspiring with the Americans.
However the President SUPERSEDED and REVERSED Gen. Luna's disciplinary action against these people who were liabilities to the freedom of the Philippines!
The irony of it was that when Heneral Luna gave his resignation letter, President Aguinaldo turned it down. Ensuring Luna that he believes in him as an effective General and the country needs him to lead.
Heneral Luna shouted, "THEN LET ME DO MY JOB!"
How can you give someone the responsibility to lead a team and say that you trust his abilities, but don't agree on his decisions or suggestions?
Even Heneral Luna's proposal to have a stronghold in the Cordilleras was put on hold by Aguinaldo. A decision wherein Aguinaldo caused him his failure eventually.
Luna's intention of sincere nationalism was misperceived as a desire for power.
When you start out too strong because of your burning desire to attain a goal (whether to liberate your country or deliver a successful project), some people with low E.Q. will feel insecure. Rather than supporting you to achieve a company wide goal they will instead pull you down through lack of support, withholding important information, passive aggressiveness etc.
Thus, "talanka mentality" was coined because of a similar behavior of crabs pulling each other inside a pot when others are trying to escape… instead of helping them.
This is something that all leaders with high sense of responsibility will have to bear. They are perceived as "threats" instead of someone who can make the lives of individual members better in the long run.
So if you watched Survivor, you will learn how to play and work "under the radar" and build allies against other members of the group. Something that "non-hypocrites" will find hard to do. Just like Heneral Luna's flaw, was his inability to play Games of Thrones.
If you find resistance to change, then you know that you are dealing with these type of people. Stay away from them if you can or read about "who moved my cheese".
Resistance to Change... to be continued.
1. Command Responsibility Without Command Authority (translation: Boss ba kita?)

Then Heneral Luna had Artikulo Uno read, if my memory serves me right it states that…
Ang sinumang hindi sumunod sa utos ng Heneral ng digmaan ay tatanggalan ng ranggo, armas, at ipapapatay ng walang paglilitis sa hukumang militar
2. Lacks Management Support (in short ayaw sayo ng Boss mo)
The irony of it was that when Heneral Luna gave his resignation letter, President Aguinaldo turned it down. Ensuring Luna that he believes in him as an effective General and the country needs him to lead.
Heneral Luna shouted, "THEN LET ME DO MY JOB!"

3. Working With Low E.Q. People (a.k.a. mga utak talangka)
Luna's intention of sincere nationalism was misperceived as a desire for power.
Hindi ko asawa ang digmaan. Krus ko sya. - Hen. Luna
